Find the Rat at Gunsgreen House!
This half term historic Gunsgreen House in Eyemouth is encouraging all its visitors – but especially children – to track down the nine black rats that have escaped from notorious smuggler John Nisbet’s ship load of contraband.
With Halloween falling at the end of the holiday, what better place to get in the mood than a visit to this house of secrets, recently refurbished, it brings its past to life with its interactive displays. Administrator Derek Janes says; “During the holiday we need some help in finding these escaped rats. We know they are hiding in the historic rooms of Gunsgreen House and we want to know where! Anyone who finds them will get a special certificate – to put alongside a tea smuggling qualification they can also earn on a visit to Gunsgreen. We close for winter at the end of October, so this is the last chance to get a certificate this year.”
The house dates back to 1752 and today’s young visitors can still see the evidence of the special features installed by John Nisbet. A maze of hiding places and cellars, it’s far from a dull museum, every room has its own recorded presentation complete with the sounds and voices of the past. Making their way to the topmost floor children will be kept busy finding all its concealed hiding places before dropping some tea down the specially built tea shute which runs the height of the house to collect when they return downstairs. In the vast cellars which lead direct to the seashore, they can take part in games and puzzles, feel for hidden objects in the stacks of barrels and find out what it’s like to sit in one. There is even a chance to dress up as an 18th century smuggler.
During Half Term, Gunsgreen House will be open Thursday to Monday from 11.00-17.00 until October 31st 2010. Tickets are £5 for adults, £3 for children aged 5-16, under fives are free. A range of family tickets starts from £12. Eyemouth which is just minutes from the A1 also has two further museums, specialist shops and galleries and award winning fish and chips and ice cream.
