The Glendale Great Oaks

Mighty Oaks From Little Acorns Grow…

Rachel Tait of GAS and Robert Scott

The Glendale Agricultural Society (GAS), has teamed up with local, leading, independent sawmill A & J Scott Ltd to provide 125 Glendale school children with 125 oak saplings, to mark the Society’s 125th anniversary.

To mark this major milestone GAS have invited school children from across Glendale to be part of the ‘Glendale Great Oaks’.  Each of the 125 children will be presented with a tree by A & J Scott Ltd which they can take home, plant and watch grow into a mighty oak.

So if you have a child or grandchild and would like them to be included please contact Rachael Tait by emailing [email protected] 01668 283868.

Since the very beginning, 1892, the children of the Glendale area have been very much involved in the show; whether it be showing livestock, presenting their cookery, artwork, handwriting and creations.  It was a natural progression to include the children of Glendale, to encourage them to embrace nature and to grow their own part of Glendale history.  The average oak tree lives for 150 – 300 years, so the saplings planted by the children will be here in Glendale for generations to come potentially when the GAS celebrates its 250th anniversary!

A & J Scott Ltd is a leading UK home grown sawmill.  Operating since 1960 and based at Wooperton, it offers sawn timber for a wide variety of uses, principally in outdoor and garden products; fencing, landscaping, DIY and the pallet and packaging sectors.  As an FSC® registered company they source all their timber from sustainably managed forests.

Having been involved in the Glendale Show and the Children’s Countryside Day for many years Robert Scott, Managing Director of A & J Scott Ltd, gives background to their involvement in the ‘Glendale Great Oaks’ initiative:

“As a leading timber business and sawmill in the area, we are delighted to be supporting this initiative for the 125th anniversary of the Glendale Agricultural Society.  The longevity of the oaks, which we hope will be planted throughout the area, are a great symbol of the endurance of the Society, as well as giving the children a valuable insight into nature and hopefully encouraging them to have a life-long interest in trees.”

The Oak saplings will be presented to the successful children at The Glendale Show, on Monday 28th August, and so children must be in attendance to receive their tree.  Please note that failure to attend will result in the tree being allocated to someone else.

Rachael Tait, GAS Secretary, said: “It is only with the continued support of sponsors such as A&J Scott that the Society and the show has continued for the last 125 years, and with their support we hope to be here for at least the next 125 years!  The natural synergy between the ‘Glendale Great Oaks’ and A&J Scott Ltd has lent itself very well to this project.  As a company they employ over 160 people from the local Glendale community, and they continually support the Glendale Economy.”

The gates for Glendale Show open at 9am on Bank Holiday Monday August 28th.  Tickets can be purchased online in advance at a reduced rate.
