Romans at Reeds

H&H Reeds Printers often have some unusual requests for print. The printers employ cutting edge technology but were a little surprised at one of their more recent tasks. Dating quite literally back to Roman times the Penrith based company were asked to create almost life size figurines for Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery in Carlisle.

There were nine figurines produced in total, dating through the ages, commencing with a Roman Gladiator with horse and chariot, an Egyptian Man, an Edwardian Lady and also a World War II evacuee with her teddy and suitcase.

The characters are being used to promote some of the exhibitions being held at Tullie House. They will also be used within Tullie House’s family friendly programme, with school sessions and in resource and activity areas for children.

The design brief given to H&H Reeds Printers was to fill a Living Wall with “life like” characters as Dene Marshall, Managing Director of H&H Reeds explains:

“This is certainly one of the more unusual items that we have been asked to produce and it was a real team effort. Our studio in Penrith completed the lay out and then it was printed and cut by our specialist signs division in Carlisle.”

Judith Streatfeild, Audience Development Officer at Tullie House dealt with the project and remarks on the finished characters:

“We are so pleased with how they have turned out and they really are very good. We were surprised at just how big the figures look when on display, 2/3 of what their size would have been in real Roman times we are sure visitors to the museum are going to enjoy them”.

This project was a little different to the stationary, pamphlets, maps and children’s books; H&H Reeds Printers regular print jobs. However it was definitely one which showed the full potential of the company’s cutting edge technology and array of talent.

The figures have now made the trip to Carlisle and will be on display at Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery in Castle Street as part of their Exhibitions.
